Double Helix

This piece was a unique project for us which meant a lot to many.

We had the honour of creating a memorial piece for a local college in remembrance of a beloved teacher who had passed away.

Throughout the process we maintained a lot of communication with the college regarding design and location. With the original location being above a staircase, we made brackets to have the piece mounted horizontally so no student could unmount or break the memorial off the wall. This however changed as the staff made a case for the piece using desks from the teachers classroom which looks great.

The piece is made from 60x12mm flat wrapped around an interior of 300mm diameter using 16mm bars to attach the two sides together using M12 threaded bar with shear bolts. We didn’t tenon the bars due to each rod having to be tightened a small amount at a time helping to physically pull the entire piece together. The finish is wire wheel and renaissance wax. The total height of the piece is 1,000mm with an outer diameter of 324mm plus bolts.
